Christianson was an associate professor of Church history and doctrine at Brigham Young University when this was published. Among the sources cited are those which assert, either directly or by implication, that the Bering Strait formed a land, ice, or water bridge for countless numbers of Old World immigrants entering the vast, unoccupied expanses of the Americas. Although the literature has been virtually unanimous on this point, the hypothesis that the Bering Strait was the only or even the primary route of access used by the ancestors of the American Indian is inescapably open to question. The virtual absence of artifacts necessary to establish cultural parallels between habitation sites located on opposite sides of the strait should have encouraged doubt and fostered debate. In addition, the ancestral origins of the Paleo-Indian and the time of their arrival in the Americas are subjects that have not been conclusively established. An uneasiness in this regard is expressed in the writings of some thoughtful scholars who are bothered by wildly inflated dating and questionable artifact claims.
The Man who wrote the LDS Essay on the Book of Abraham was a fraud?
He instituted a very strict rule that no blacks were to be ordained or given temple ordinances. Elijah Abel outlived Brigham Young and the validity of his ordination was repeatedly discussed by the brethren see All Abraham’s Children , p. The rationalization for restricting blacks developed over a period of years. Scholar Armand Mauss observed: Also, during the generation after Brigham Young, three other important internal developments occurred that seemed to point to a divinely condoned racial restriction.

You can find the original here. Are you a gay Mormon who is single and looking for love? Then a forthcoming website is here to answer your prayers. Created by Andrew Markle, “Origins” seeks to give gay Mormons an online social network to meet others like them for “marriage or long-term commitment. Markle stated that Origins will also “connect gay Mormons with allies and help them reconcile their [religious] beliefs with their lifestyle.
Expected to launch in the second quarter of , Origins is supported by Affirmation, an advocacy group for LGBTQ Mormons made up of both actively practicing members of the Mormon faith and non-members. Affirmation seeks provide a safe space in the Mormon church “where LGBT individuals, as well as those questioning their orientation, can associate with like individuals, ask questions, and know that they are not alone.
Markle believes that the Origins website will be a crucial component of this effort. Although neither Origins nor Affirmations is officially sanctioned by the Mormon Church — as the Elders do not openly recognize LGBT organizations as official church entities — Origins comes on the heels of the church’s announcement that they will minister to LGBTQ individuals.
In December, the Mormon Church launched “Mormons and Gays,” a website devoted to “discussion on same-sex attraction. Like Origins, Mormons and Gays acts as a conduit for conversation and acceptance of LGBTQ individuals, so that church members can “respond sensitively and thoughtfully when they encounter same-sex attraction in their own families, among other Church members, or elsewhere.
Does DNA Disprove The Book Of Mormon Claim Of Native American Origins?
Reference to a case where the given method did not work This is perhaps the most common objection of all. Creationists point to instances where a given method produced a result that is clearly wrong, and then argue that therefore all such dates may be ignored. Such an argument fails on two counts: First, an instance where a method fails to work does not imply that it does not ever work. The question is not whether there are “undatable” objects, but rather whether or not all objects cannot be dated by a given method.
The fact that one wristwatch has failed to keep time properly cannot be used as a justification for discarding all watches.
Jan 14, · For Markle, Origins will act as a further step in the right direction for gay Mormons — moving from preliminary dialogue to a place of action.
First, it is a coauthored paper with Wade Ardern and Matthew Roper; they will give the last part of our presentation. After these presentations, I realized my arguments in favor of The Book of Mormon were deficient and that much more must be done before you should take them seriously. We report on a project designed to meet higher standards of evidence, argument, and sampling. Third, I am not an expert in Mormon apologetics; I am a Mesoamerican archaeologist, and I spend most of my time pawing through dirt rather than haggling with religionists.
Fourth, about 95 percent of what has been said and written about archaeology and The Book of Mormon is nonsense. Most of it comes from missionaries, evangelists, and tour guides. Overall, however, critics of Mormonism have done more to establish the authenticity of The Book of Mormon than have their Mormon brethren. In recognition of their past efforts, we dedicate our remarks this morning to Jerald and Sandra Tanner of Lighthouse Ministries; they have helped establish the truth of The Book of Mormon more than they know.
In the book was a 23 pound weakling, now thanks to years of criticism, it is a pound colossus. Fifth, the whole quarrel over evidence is based on a fallacy of proof. No quantity of archaeological evidence will ever suffice to prove beyond reasonable doubt that either the Bible or The Book of Mormon is true — or false. Evidence is interesting and has it uses, but only as a means of better understanding the book, not of proving it to atheists and wayward saints.
Seventh, and finally, we harbor no doubts that Joseph Smith translated the book by the power of God.

Forward by Sandra Tanner Description From book jacket. But there was a time in America when the Mormon church was seen as little more than a cultlike collection of polygamous, religious zealots seeking the political overthrow of America. This aspect of Mormon history, dating back to Palmyra, New York, in the early ‘s, is but one facet of an enthralling saga laced with all the elements of an action-packed Hollywood movie: Nevertheless, Mormonism has managed to emerge as one of the world’s wealthiest and most influential religions.
In fact, it wields more economic power more effectively than any other organized religion in existence.
I swallow the visceral anger I see when Sister Smith just throws up her hands in a kind of playful bliss: Original transcripts of all the relevant records. They are all available. A Global History of Blacks and Mormonism: For example, we know that in March , Brigham Young explicitly advocated for black priesthood ordination; in February , he explicitly advocated against it again, all versions of each document are available in my anthology. We do have excellent reason to believe that the marriage of Enoch Lewis a black priesthood holder in Lowell, MA to a white woman and the subsequent birth of their biracial child triggered Young—as it often did for those outside of the Massachusetts bubble it was the only state at the time that allowed for legal interracial marriage.
When did Brigham Young flip? But to use that point to justify claims of vast sweeping ignorance?

Judaism espouses belief in a monotheistic God, who is creator of the universe and who leads His people, the Jews, by speaking through prophets. His word is revealed in the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament , especially in that part known as the Torah. The Torah also contains, according to rabbinic tradition, a total of biblical commandments, including the Ten Commandments, which are explicated in the Talmud.
Jews believe that the human condition can be improved, that the letter and the spirit of the Torah must be followed, and that a Messiah will eventually bring the world to a state of paradise.
Share this article Share Last night, when we spoke to ‘Bernann’ on the telephone, having tracked her down to a Seoul hotel room, her hostile reaction hardly quashed the intrigue. Because that’s all I’m prepared to talk to you about. She first made the headlines, albeit local ones, in when she was crowned Miss Wyoming, but soon tired of the world of beauty pageants and enrolled as a drama student at Brigham Young University, in Utah, the heartland of Mormon America.
It was there that she met year-old Kirk Anderson, a 6ft 4in fellow drama undergraduate, some seven years her junior, from a small town near Salt Lake City. There was a brief fling, and McKinney later claimed that she had miscarried his baby. Overcome by guilt, Anderson, a devout Mormon, apparently sought advice from his bishop, who told him to sever ties with McKinney and move away from Utah.
A topless Joyce poses for the camera She was not prepared to be spurned so easily. Private detectives were hired to trace Anderson from the U. Armed with an imitation revolver, May confronted year-old Anderson on the steps of Ewell’s Church of the Latter Day Saints, and frog-marched him to a car in which McKinney was waiting. McKinney later said that she had packed the fridge with Anderson’s favourite food and studied The Joy Of Sex in preparation for what was to come.
Joyce McKinney was a beauty queen in the s and was a former Miss Wyoming before going to Brigham Young University, in Utah, to study drama May chained the prisoner to a bed. For two days, McKinney tried to persuade the missionary to marry her and father her children.

Since , he has been writing about rare Mormon documents. Since , half of all new discoveries in Mormon history have been by him. I closely watch all activity in the Mormon collecting community, and I can tell you who is selling the item for which you are looking, and when a book is a good value. Mormon collecting has always been investment, in contrast to consumption. In the time that it takes a new car to depreciate to nothing, a equally priced group of Mormon books might increase ten-fold in value.
But you cannot display your stocks like you can show your Mormon Americana collection. Mormon books are a great way to demonstrate your strong faith, your sophistication, your heritage, and your conservatism. Prosperous Mormons should build refined libraries or even walk-in vaults into their homes, as a display of conspicuous investment, or a heritage one never inherited. Many collectors enjoy this prestige, taking books to presidency meetings, and sharing them with General Authorities; others feel a mission to preserve their heritage and church history; or stir-up others to become more interested.
Wives often develop their own interests, often tiny hymn books with the first Sacred Hymns. Rare Mormon books can also be a conservative, low-profile, transportable and discreet asset, with minimal recordkeeping, unlike stock or other financial instruments. Who collects Typical Mormon collectors include people from every income range, but typically include doctors, lawyers, professors; small-business entrepreneurs; and billionaires.
For more information on the economics of collecting rare books, see Market. Even non-Mormons have been collecting rare books.
Our critics allege that science has proven the Book of Mormon to be false. What does the science of human genetics really say about the Book of Mormon? The answer involves understanding what the Book of Mormon actually is and says. On this Mormon Answers page, I explore some common questions about DNA and the Book of Mormon, and argue that the critics aren’t attacking anything the Book of Mormon requires, but common assumptions about and even misreadings of the text.

Once a week worship service In Judaism worship services are held daily. The concept of a once a week worship service is unique to Christianity. And there was one day in every week that was set apart that they should gather themselves together to teach the people, and to worship the Lord their God, and also, as often as it was in their power, to assemble themselves together.

Tuesday, March 20, Not That Simple: Book of Mormon Geography and Dating Those with interest in either supporting or attacking the Book of Mormon using science can make a host of unintentional errors. Sometimes the errors come from misreading or misapplying the text, other times from improper understanding of complex scientific issues or other aspects of scholarship. We all like easy answers, especially ones that prove we are right, but life is often more complicated than that. Instructive lessons about the complexities of applying science and scholarship to the Book of Mormon come from the healthy debate occurring in the LDS community on Book of Mormon geography.
Brother Stoddard has provided many valuable insights into the Book of Mormon over the years. In this case, though, there appear to be some gaps requiring revision in the approach, just as there have been major gaps in my own thinking over the years, including some of my own technical and other publications, not to mention an occasional visionary patent that looks sorely misguided today.
Magleby concludes by stating that “Ted Stoddard tries to argue that C dating authenticates the Grijalva-Sidon correlation and invalidates the Usumacinta-Sidon theory. It is not that simple. From DNA and Book of Mormon population studies to details of geography or even the “simple” area of Arabian Peninsula locations, it’s rarely a simple matter where one line of reasoning or one simple “fact” wins the day.
